last December I went in for a check up and my Doctor found a goiter on my thyriod. In January I went for an ultra sound and then a biopsy. The biopsy came back with abnormal cells, the surgeon at that point told me most people would have it removed, though I did not seem to be up for that, so we could wait six months and see if there where any changes then.
In July I went back for another ultra sound and biopsy(fine needle aspiration) every thing was the same, which has made for a very hard decision. The surgeon said the decision is mine and whatever I choose is the right decision. He said my thyriod will only get bigger and eventually die and I will have to be on medication some time in the future.
Next at the end of July I went to see my family practice doctor to see what his opinion was , his was basically the same as the surgeon although he said any time you can avoid surgery you should, but if I was having symptoms such as extremely tired or exhaustion, difficulty swallowing, pain in my neck, hoarness in my voice ect. I should have the surgery, because he said the symptoms will only get worse. little did either doctor know, I have been having all of those symptoms and more, such as brittle nails, hair loss, brain fog, irritability and if though I hate to admit it little or no sex drive. (my poor husband!)
Tomorrow I see an endrocronoligist for a third opinion, I want to see if he feels it could be an option to take meds to try and reduce the goiter or if he feels surgery is my best option. I should also say that if I have the surgery I will also be having my very large tonsils out.
As of right now I have until the last few days been very stressed out about the decision, I feel like the best thing to do is to listen to whatever the doctor tomorrow says, although some how I get the feeling that surgery is probably the best option. Even though I am really scared about that. I am also really scared about the alternitive, which according to the doctors is for it to get bigger and worse.
I only hope I make the right decision, the one my father in Heaven wants me to choose.
On Aug 2, 2010 I went to see Dr. Nizam who is an endrocronologist. Before I went, I was going with a prayer in my heart, that I wanted to know what he would tell me if I were his wife or sister ect. The first thing he said after reviewing my records was if you were my sister or my mother I would tell you to have surgery to have it removed, and the went on to explain why. As he was saying this, the spirit was there witnessing to not only me but to Renee(who took me) also that what he was saying is what I should do. I never thought Heavenly Father would answer my prayers in such a way.
My orignal plan was to have surgery on august 17, 2010, however Dr. Nizam said that he wanted to check my vit D levels and make sure they were good before I could have the surgery, otherwise they could have problems after surgery regulating the calcium levels.
Yesterday August 3, 2010 I got a call from Dr. Nizam's office saying that my vit D levels are too low. normal is in between 30-80 and mine was only 15. So I am now on 100,000 units a week of vit D for 1 month then 50,000 units a week for 1 month then 50,000 units a month for 6 months. We are going to try and see if I can have the surgery on October 12, 2010. Hopefully my levels are up by October and I won't have any problems!
After talking with the surgeon again after he conferred with dr. Nizam, they really think it needs to come out by November. The risk of cancer is too high for it to stay in. My vit. D levels were checked on friday and are back up to normal! Surgery is scheduled for Sept 21st, which also happens to be on Angelica's birthday.
I am scheduled to have my pre op next Thursday the 16th, Beverly is also going to have a pre op appt then to get tubes; hopefully they will schedule surgery for the same day as mine.
had my pre op today the doctor has decided not to take my tonsils out, so recovery should not be as long!! I will write more after surgery on Tuesday love to all!!
Wow, what a week! Tuesday after the surgery I was really sick and throwing up from the meds they gave me. Let me tell you throwing up over and over with a cut in your neck does not feel very good!
finally I told them to stop giving me morphene and give me ibprophen instead, that seemed to do the trick just in time for my kids to come visit,( in which they all had mental breakdownswhen I didn't go home with them.) I was able to get some chicken noodle soup in me.
I was doing well wed. morning and the doctor said I could go home. He said the pathologist report hadn't come back yet, but when they took my thyriod out all looked clean.
Thursday afternnoon the doctor called and said the report had come back, the left side, that had the nodule and goiter was fine, however they found a few spots of Cancer on the right side. Since it is removed I'm considered cured and all should be well. BOY AM I GLAD I LISTENED TO THE SPIRIT AND GOT IT OUT! I am going to call an oncalogist to make sure I don't need any follow up care. Its always good just to be sure.
I am so grateful for everyones thoughts and prayer, I am defiantly a believer of the power of prayer!
