In doing this scripture search today I decided to study the gospel topic Hope since yesterday one of the cross references to the scripture I studied was topical guide hope. To do this I decided to start with a talk given in Oct 2008 general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints address by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf Second Counselor in the First Presidency.
"Hope in God, His goodness, and His power refreshes us with courage during difficult challenges."
President Uchtdorf tells us hope is one leg of a three-legged stool together with faith and charity. He tells us the scriptures leave no room for doubt of the importance of hope. the apostle paul taught in Romans 15:4
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
He gives us reference to Psalm 146:5 Saying "Hope has the power to fill our lives with happiness. It's absence- when this desire of our heart is delayed- can make "the heart sick." Proverbs 13:12
He tells us how "hope is a gift of the spirit." that "it is a hope that through the atonement of Jesus Christ and the power of His Resurrection, we shall be raised unto life eternal and this because of our faith in the Savior. This kind of hope is both a principle of promise as well as a commandment, and as with all commandments, we have the resposibility to make it an active part of our lives and overcome the temptation to lose hope. Hope in our Heavenly Father's merciful plan of happiness leads to peace, mercy, rejoicing and gladness. the hope of salvation is like a protective Helemet; it is the foundation of our faith and an anchor to our souls."
I am so grateful for the gift of hope
Pres. Uchtdorf goes on to say:
"Hope is not a knowledge, but rather the abiding trust that the Lord will fulfill His promise to us.It is confidence that if we live according to God's laws and words of His prophets now, we will receive desired blessings in the future. It is believing and expecting our prayers will be answered. It is manifest in confidence, optimism, enthusiasm, and patient perseverance."
we can all defiantly learn from this, i know for myself personally i can learn to be more hopeful, I suppose that is why I an going over this topic again.
Right now in my life the thing I am most immediately hoping for is that next year this time Justin will have a job ready to go to in the fall of 2011, we hope we will be able o buy a house and that we will be somewhere where we can best serve the Lord and that are children and Justin and I will have friends who are good examples of righteousness. We also hope to have a garden bid enough to sustain our family for a year at a time, of course that may take years to get that big, but that is our hope nevertheless.
Alma 34:41 But that ye have patience, and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions.
This scripture as come to mean a lot to me as with this talk by Pres. Uchtdorf it has gotten me through some rough times in my life. I hope that one day my children will take comfort in the scriptures and conference talks as I have only more so. I am grateful for the oppurtunity to hear and listen to a prophet today.
until the next time, Richele
